Asian American Federation Grants $355,000 to Community Organizations for Census 2010
NEW YORK- The Asian American Federation’s Census 2010 Community Engagement Campaign kicks off at a press conference today at the Federation’s office. The campaign, a $750,000 initiative, was made possible by funding from a private foundation and the New York State Department of State. Federation Executive Director, Cao O states that “the Federation’s Census 2010 Community Engagement Campaign marks an unprecedented level of funding support to grassroots organizations in the Asian community for census outreach and promotion in New York City.”
“In the previous census, my constituents in Chinatown were severely undercounted,” said Assemblyman Sheldon Silver who represents Lower Manhattan. “It is a great honor to support census outreach projects in Lower Manhattan and to ensure that all Chinatown residents are counted. The information collected in the 2010 Census is used to direct billions of dollars in federal funding for essential services and benefits that we all rely on.”
“The campaign brings together a diverse network of community organizations to ensure a complete count of all Asian Americans in the region,” said Mr. O. In its first round, the campaign provides funding support totaling $355,000 to 21 community organizations in the NY metro area. Additional grants will be made to organizations in the New York metro area in the coming weeks. The remaining portion of the funding is also used for an ad campaign that is going to appear in public transportation systems in New York City, Albany, and Syracuse, as well as for implementing the Census 2010 outreach strategies on a regional and national basis.
Assemblywoman Grace Meng who represents Flushing states, “I thank the Asian American Federation for their important investment to help our community. It is absolutely crucial that everyone participate in the 2010 Census. The answers to 10 simple questions could help decide our future. We’re counting on you!”
